Our History

Cornerstone Baptist Church

A Brief History

In June of 1992, a group of people left another church to form a new congregation led by Pastor John Williams. That same month, a prayer meeting was held in the home of Hank and Doris Fuller. We felt led that this new church should be named Cornerstone Baptist Church. On the first Sunday in July of 1992, we met in the home of Dale and Susan Richardson for worship. The church met in their home the entire first month. During this time a Constitution & By-Laws was written and accepted, and we received a Charter of Incorporation as a church from the state of South Carolina. On August 9, 1992, the church met at the Pengally Chapel at Cummins Theological Seminary on Main Street in Summerville, where we continued to meet for the next four years. Sunday School classes were formed, a choir organized, a Building committee headed by Dan Carey was formed, a building fund was started, and a second building was rented for Sunday School classes. Sunday evening services were held at Dukes BBQ Restaurant on Cedar Street in Summerville.

On November 6, 1994, we purchased eleven acres at our present location. Groundbreaking for what is now our children & youth building took place on January 14, 1996. We first began using this building for our services on October 26, 1996, and formally dedicated it on October 26, 1997. Some of our fund-raising projects included car washes, fish fries, cookbook sales, candy bar sales, and a concert by recording artist Squire Parsons. In addition, we sold 4+ acres in 1997 to reduce the mortgage of this building. It soon became evident that a second building would be necessary to accommodate the growing size of the congregation. Led by Dan Carey and the Building Committee, our church contacted Tupper Construction Company to build a multi-purpose, pre-engineered metal building. Groundbreaking on this building took place on April 18, 2004. On February 27, 2005, we had our first service featuring a gospel concert by Squire Parsons. On May 16, 2005, we received the Occupancy Certificate from the Town of Summerville.

The Reverend Steve Lloyd became our pastor in September of 2006. He left in June of 2008 to pastor a church near Fayetteville, NC. Reverend Scott Eadie led us through our transition, during which time, our church voted to become a Purpose Driven Church. The Lord then led Reverend Eric Seidenschmidt to be our Pastor, and this was confirmed by a vote of the church on September 28, 2008.

Some of our notable "Firsts" are:

  • Seth Conner was the first Deacon ordained.
  • David Carey was the first person baptized on August 23, 1992.
  • Suzanne Smith was our first Music Director.
  • Our first VBS was in our woods the summer of 1994.
  • Hurricane Floyd left our first steeple in the yard.
